It is with great pleasure that l’Orchestre Nouvelle Génération (ONG) presents Svetlana Migdissova’s My Dear Friend…, a sublime encounter between theatre and music, at Pollack Hall, on Wednesday, January 24th at 7:30 pm.
My Dear Friend… is based on the 13-year correspondence between P. Tchaikovsky and his patroness, Nadezhda von Meck. These letters showcase not only the dramatic relationship between the composer and his patroness, but also Tchaikovsky’s own evolution as a composer. The story unfolds within the ever-changing late 19th-century.
The role of Tchaikovsky will be performed by Vitali Makarov, and Nadezhda von Meck by Maria Monakhova. Tchaikovsky’s music, carefully selected for the occasion, will be like a third lead character. A memorable evening, where music and theatre will truly be unified!
PROGRAMME
Excerpts from works by Tchaikovsky :
- Serenade for Strings
- Children’s Album 39
- The Seasons 37b
And more…
Vitali Makarov, actor
Vitali Makarov graduated from the prestigious Moscow Arts Theater School, founded by Stanislavsky. Upon graduation he began an illustrious onstage career that began in Russia and then continued in Canada, where he performs in both English and French. In 1997, Vitali played the title role of Hamlet in Théâtre Deuxième Réalité’s Montreal Critic’s Award-winning production, directed by Alexandre Marine. He has acted in a number of Canadian and American feature films and was a regular cast member in the popular French television series Les Poupées Russes and O’.
Vitali spent last summer in Russia, filming a new thriller alongside Keanu Reeves.
Maria Monakhova, actress
Maria Monakhova was trained in Moscow and worked at the Pushkin Drama Theatre for more than fifteen years; acting in Shakespeare, Tolstoi, and Williams plays. You may have seen her around Montreal in La Cerisaie (produced by Cinéspec), Nous Autres, The Swan, Hamlet, Ne jetez pas de cendre par terre, Le Suicidaire, 28 28 and 12 with Théâtre Deuxième Réalité; or in Le Songe d’une nuit d’été and L’Impromptu de l’Almadu with Le Groupe de la Veillée. Monakhova was also featured in Histoires de famille at the Théâtre Prospero and Le Boeuf sur le toit by Cocteau/Milhaud at the Théâtre Maisonneuve (an I Musici production in collaboration with Théâtre Deuxième Réalité and the National Circus School). She has equally acted in Boston, in The Language of Kisses with Basement on the Hill productions and Playing a Victim at the ArtsLand festival. Monakhova also has producing experience—for example, she assisted producer Alexandre Marine in staging Marie Stewart at the Rideau Vert.
L’Orchestre Nouvelle Génération (ONG)
Founded by Yuli and Eleonora Turovsky in 2011, the Nouvelle Génération Chamber Orchestra is quickly establishing a reputation on Quebec’s classical music scene. Despite its tender age, the Orchestra has already garnered a loyal following of enthusiastic fans here and abroad. Its members’ trademark intensity, enthusiasm, and joy in music-making never fail to leave a strong impression. Derived from Yuli Turovsky’s unique artistic principles and distinctive musical values, Nouvelle Génération is so named not solely because of the young age of its members, but also as a nod to their constant search for everything “new” in performance: individual and novel interpretations, repertoire programming – be it new compositions by current composers or revisiting old standards in unique, exciting ways – or pairing classical music with different art forms such as painting, dance, and theatre. It is the Orchestra’s mission to bring renewed life to classical music, to reaffirm its accessibility, and to deviate from the preconception of what classical music concerts are “supposed to be”.
An exciting fusion of lasting heritage and keen innovation… this is the true meaning of Nouvelle Génération.
