On April 10th, 2011 at the Cosmodôme museum in Laval, a remarkable event took place marking the 50th anniversary of the first manned flight into space which was achieved by the Russian cosmonaut Yury Gagarin. The celebration, with more than 700 attendees, was organized by the Canadian Foundation of Russian Culture in colaboration with the Cosmodôme museum and the Russian school “Gramota“.

The director of the museum, Sylvain Bélair, inaugurated the Documentary Center of Yury Gagarin. It was a special day for all participants – proud of their national hero, Russian-speaking and numerous Canadians families got closer acquainted with the history of space discoveries, which started 50 years ago.

The guests were invited to take a look at the exhibition, the space shuttle and the control panel, read archival documents on Gagarin’s flight and on Russian history of space exploration. After that they could talk to the museum curators and show their own drawings and paintings. The event had a considerable impact on the young visitors and their knowledge of modern science.

The chief sponsor of the event was the Police Association of Quebec (APPQ), thanks to which, participation was free for more than 700 persons.
